Cutting Glass

Cutting small pattern pieces for stained glass

Cutting glass is actually a two step process. The Glass is first scored, then it is broken. To score the glass hold your glass cutter like a pencil and try out a few cuts by going forward or backward but never go back over your line to prevent damage on the blade. Your knife should be well oiled; either you have added cutting oil in your glass cutter or just lubricate the blade with oil. When cutting small pieces for stained glass, and I can’t emphasis this enough, safety glasses are a must. Safety first, Some people like to wear gloves but they are a little hard to work with. You won’t mind the cuts after a while, they are part of this hobby.

How to break glass

For once in your life “Don’t be scarred to break the glass”. Before you use your pliers tap the glass after the cut (on the back side of the glass), all along that cut. Sometimes the glass will just break at the cut you just made by tapping on the glass and other times you’ll have to use your pliers. If your glass has enough space on both sides some people feel good enough just to use their hands. But always use extreme caution and be careful. There are different pliers that can be used, I prefer the Lightweight Running Pliers , this pliers has a little notch that you place under you cut and it help putting the pressure just at the right place for your cut.
